The days of vatted malts are gone – listen to our chat with John Glaser

john glaser compass box whiskies

John Glaser from Compass Box whiskies – a true maverick and gentlemen of the industry had a chat with Marsh. He’s an elusive genius in our opinion, so it is quite exclusive to have such a long discussion about his life, challenges, whiskies and thoughts about SA.

We thought it would be good to post this interview seeing that our beloved term “vatted malt” has now slipped into history. John has been instrumental in creating whiskies in this style that have seriously impressed the world. Now they are flying the flag high with education around the new name “Blended Malt Scotch Whisky”.

He did however get a sneaky vatted malt on the market on the very last day it was legal. Unfortuntely this will not be available in SA, but have a look at the website for moreĀ  info: http://www.compassboxwhisky.com

Excerpt from Compass Box Newsletter on 22 November 2011:

Happy Last Vatted Malt Day everyone!

From midnight tonight (22nd November 2011), a new era in Scotch whisky begins. From that point, all Vatted Malts will by law have to be labelled Blended Malt Scotch Whisky.

Join us today, wherever you are, for a dram of Vatted Malt (preferably Compass Box, natch) to bid farewell to this glorious category and usher in the new dawn of Blended Malt Scotch Whisky.

Please post your photos on our Facebook page or email us at hello@compassboxwhisky.com – the best entry will win a bottle of Last Vatted Malt.

We are also delighted to announce that The Last Vatted Malt and The Last Vatted Grain are now available for pre-order from your local retailer (in certain markets) or via our UK Online shop.

Unfortunately, due to regulatory issues, these two limited editions will not be available through our normal distributor and retailler network in the USA (or South Africa). Sorry!

  1. Excellent listen, great work Marsh. Such a pity that the two new vatted releases won’t be available here, but on the other hand it’s awesome to hear John is planning an appearance in SA next year. What a whisky legend.
